Series 8 of The X Factor kicked off with 12.6 million viewers for ITV1 yesterday, according to overnight figures.
An average of 11.3 million tuned in between 8PM and 9.15PM to watch ‘the next generation’ of judges give their verdict on auditionees trying out in London and Birmingham.
This equals last year’s series opener, which was the largest audience for an opening episode in The X Factor’s history.
The peak of 12.6 million (which includes ITV1 +1 figures) represented a 51% share of the audience at the time.
The Xtra Factor, hosted by Caroline Flack and Olly Murs, attracted 1.17 million viewers on ITV2 (and a further 260k on ITV2 +1) – slightly down on the same episode last year.
Overall, ITV1′s primetime share averaged 29.5%, well ahead of its nearest rivals BBC1 (18%) and Channel 5 (6%).
Keep it central!
