Series 6 runner-up Olly Murs has said this year’s X Factor is less about the “cheesy acts” as bosses hope of finding a global artist.
Murs, who co-hosts The Xtra Factor alongside Caroline Flack, has enjoyed chart success since appearing on the show, and is in the running for what would be his second UK number one this weekend.
However, most acts, including winners of the show such as Joe McElderry and Leon Jackson, have struggled with their music careers.
Murs told The Sun: “We’re getting more singer-songwriters, rappers and alternative people.
“We’re not really looking for that cheesy X Factor winner any more. We’re looking for that credible artist that can go across the world.”
Earlier this month, judge Gary Barlow claimed that because of their entertainment value, it is inevitable that producers would “push for the ridiculous acts to get through”, but hoped the new series would be better at “resisting” them.
The most recent X Factor winner, Matt Cardle, announced details of his debut single and album last week.
The X Factor continues this evening at 8pm on ITV1. You can catch Olly on The Xtra Factor straight after the main show at 9.15pm on ITV2.
Would it still be The X Factor without a cheesy act or two in the live shows?
Keep it central!
